Help for Snorers
Do you or anyone you know snore, or suffer from excessive daytime sleepiness? You may be suffering from sleep apnea.
Sleep apnea is a temporary cessation of breathing during sleep, most often caused by an obstruction in the upper airway. The muscles of the throat usually relax during sleep, but in most people there’s a large enough passage for air to get through. In some people, however—those who are overweight, suffer from nasal obstruction, or have a certain shaped jaw or palate, for example—this passage does not permit enough air to pass through.
During periods of sleep apnea, the oxygen in the blood is decreased, which can lead to excessive sleepiness during the day, and, in severe cases, to heart problems.
Dr. Taylor can fabricate a special orthotic appliance that will pull the mandible (the bone of the lower jaw) forward. This keeps the upper airway open and allows air to flow freely through the passage, eliminating or reducing the sleep apnea problems.
Is sleep apnea a problem for you?
