Oral Health Is Closely Linked to Your Overall Health

August 24, 2015

Keeping your oral health in great shape is necessary.Maintaining fantastic oral health is vital for your overall health. The two work together as one to help keep you healthy and happy. If your oral health is suffering, your overall health will fall in line. Conversely, if your overall health is suffering, your oral health will also be impacted. Not taking proper care of your teeth can have major consequences. We’re talking about diseases, infections, possibility of developing oral cancer – all of it. The last thing any patient wants is a broken-down body due to oral problems that could have been averted. If you didn’t think taking proper care of your oral health was important before, surely you do now.

Our office in The Woodlands, TX wants you to practice not good, but great dental hygiene. Not only does it keep your smile looking and feeling great, but it also helps keep everything functioning well. Our dental team and Dr. Johnny Taylor cannot stress enough how vital practicing good dental habits is for your overall health. He’s the dentist The Woodlands residents can trust with their oral health.

Is Your Dental Hygiene On Point?

You’d be surprised how many patients don’t know what practicing good dental hygiene entails. If you’re one of those people, it’s okay! There’s nothing wrong with being unsure about something, especially when it comes to dental health. That’s why we’re here to help!

If you aren’t doing so already, you should be brushing AND flossing your teeth twice a day. It’s generally a good rule-of-thumb to spend at least two minutes brushing and flossing. This ensures every tooth and its inner/outer surfaces are properly cleaned. This helps keep plaque, tartar and tooth decay out of your smile. A good scrub of the tongue is also recommended to assist in keeping your breath fresh. Flossing is just as important as brushing when you consider how much bacteria gets caught between your teeth. Brushing can remove most bacteria and food particles, but flossing can hit spots that a toothbrush can’t reach. Be gentle when you floss and remember: gum-bleeding is perfectly normal.

Another good dental hygiene practice that is often overlooked is going in for a checkup/exam. There’s only so much you can see when you look at your mouth in the mirror. When you come to our office in The Woodlands, TX we will thoroughly inspect your mouth. If Dr. Taylor notices any abnormalities, he will customize a treatment plan for you. He’s been doing this for over 30 years, so you can trust his expertise.  You need to come to our office at least twice a year so we can help keep your oral health in check. He’s a great dentist Spring, Rayford and Shenandoah citizens!

Overall-Health Risks Associated with Poor Oral Health

Oral problems can be a symptom of additional diseases and you might not even know it. The truth is, the same bacteria that roams through your mouth also finds its way in other areas of your body. Bacteria is everywhere inside of you.

For those that don’t think keeping your oral health intact is a big deal, take a look at what can happen if oral problems aren’t treated:

  • Heart disease
  • Premature birth
  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • Respiratory illness
