Help Your Smile and Your Wallet: Visit Your Dentist Before 2018 Ends

dental benefits formOne of the primary reasons why many people don’t visit their dentist in The Woodlands regularly is because they don’t have dental insurance. If you are fortunate enough to have oral healthcare benefits, you should definitely take full advantage of them! Your policy can help you repair and maintain your smile so it stays brilliant and happy for years to come. However, if you don’t visit your dentist before 2018 ends, you risk not getting everything you can out of your dental insurance. Let’s talk about why you should schedule at least one more dental appointment before the curtain closes on this year.

Dental Insurance: Use It or Lose It

It’s standard for dental insurance policies to operate on a calendar-year basis. With PPO plans in particular, you get a certain amount of money (usually $1,000 – $1,500) that you can put toward dental work between January 1 and December 31. The portion of that money that doesn’t get used by the end of the year disappears forever. It’s extremely rare for an insurance policy to have a rollover provision that lets you use a previous year’s benefits after they’ve expired.

It is in your best interests to check with your insurance company to see if you have any benefits remaining this year. If you do, you should schedule a routine appointment with your dentist. Not only will you be getting more out of your insurance policy, but you’ll also be able to enjoy that wonderful fresh-mouth feeling that only comes after a professional cleans your teeth.

More Reasons to Use Your Benefits This Year

You don’t want to lose out on your insurance policy’s benefits, but there are also other reasons why you should put your plan to work before the end of the year:

  • Your policy may change in 2019. Many insurance plans are adjusted slightly from year to year. In 2019, some of the fees associated with your policy, such as the deductible or your coinsurance, may increase.
  • Time may be running out on your FSA. An FSA is a special savings account that allows you or your employer to set aside tax-free money to put toward dental and medical expenses. FSA funds may expire at the end of the year, so it’s best to use them as soon as you can. The money can work with your insurance policy to make your dental care even more affordable.
  • Dental problems don’t fix themselves. If you have a minor dental problem, such as a small cavity, it’s best to get it treated as soon as possible. Delaying treatment into 2019 or later will only give the issue a chance to worsen. Your insurance policy is likely to cover a greater percentage of the cost of minor treatments than major ones.

Your dental benefits are there to help you care for your smile, so why not let them fulfill their role? Visit your dentist before 2018 ends; your wallet and your teeth will thank you!
